Stories from our people
The most meaningful thing I learned is that sometimes, old people don't want to feel they're being helped, but that they can also help others.
LightApp brought me back to life. The volunteers made me want to get out of bed and start dancing. I'm still thrilled and excited.
Some things were easy for me once but now I need help. Knowing there’s someone to turn to gives me hope.
LightApp allows me
to do good when it is convenient for me. I never
imagined that so-called 'on the spot' support would be so meaningful to both sides.
I'd like to volunteer but I can’t make a long-term commitment. Could that work?
Sure! LightApp is a specific, on-the-spot, volunteering activity. If it works for you this time – Great! If it doesn’t – all good, maybe next time.
I'd like to meet with an old person on a regular basis. Is it possible?
What happens at the end of the meeting?
After the meeting ends, we'll send you a text with a link to a quick survey. The survey will allow us to know if there's anything else we can do to support the old person you just met with, and you can also add any information you find useful (including feedback and ideas for improvement).
What's special about LightApp compared to other volunteering activities?
Compared to other organizations, LightApp is the only service of its kind that is given free-of-charge and focused on the elderly. It’s also the only program that offers old people the option to be accompanied outside of their home by volunteers.
What does the volunteering activity include?
It varies. It could be small maintenance work like switching a light bulb or taking down clothes from top shelves, or it could be going out together to a coffee shop or visiting a medical center. Each request mentions how long it should take.
By the way, why do you call them 'old people'?
We decided to bring back respect to the term ‘old’. We feel there’s so much to learn about life from old people who reach out to us (they’ve been around longer, after all). Besides, growing old is natural - we’ll (hopefully) all be old someday :)
'LIghtApp is a program initiated and managed by 'Dor LeDor
(in Hebrew, 'Generation to Generation'), established in 2010. Our aim is to find solutions to the elderly's loneliness problem, by creating inter-generational connections. Thanks to our activity, dozens of connections are being made every day across the country.
